Backflow is the reversal of the flow of water from one direction in any pipeline or plumbing system. Water is usually kept at a significant pressure to allow the water to flow from the tap, shower, etc. When the pressure fails, the reduction of pressure in the pipe may allow contaminated water to be drawn into your drinking water. Backflow can allow drinking water in plumbing systems to become contaminated and unusable.
To reduce backflow and the risk of contamination, a backflow preventer valve can be installed. A backflow prevention device is a mechanical plumbing valve installed in a plumbing system to prevent water from flowing backward in the system. A properly installed, tested and maintained backflow valve at the service entrance to a building or property can reliably prevent the backflow of water of an unknown quality from flowing back into the community water system. Backflow valves should be tested annually so you know they are working properly.
